Things to do for one day in Lyon

During our honeymoon, I asked my husband to write a personal note on each city that we’ve been to, so we would have a memory regarding all the small details and highlights in our trip.  This was his note on Lyon:

Lyon is a big city, and I consider myself lucky to have another chance to visit this city again: yes, this time was with my super nice host parents and it was part of my honeymoon with my wonderful wife. Although this is not my first time to be in this city, this is my first time to be in its old part. Located to the east of the Saone River, this old part of the city is very interesting with its hilly part and its signature traboule (we post video about traboule in here). Traboule is basically alley (most of it is covered) between old apartments building. These traboules were used by people to get to their homes quickly to the river to the river bank. And also by silk merchants to transport their products while remaining sheltered from bad weather. These traboules are well preserved until now; we found some and passed through them. Interesting; there is a sign in each door entering these traboules telling us to keep quite so that inhabitants in the apartments adjacent to the traboules are not disturbed.

We also visited an old church, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere on the top of the hilly part of the city. We took the funiculars to the top, walked down while passing through the huge roman amphitheater that was first built in around 15 BC, and then found ourselves in a nice local restaurant for our lunch at the bottom of old apartments in the old city. My wife ordered a local dish with raw-thin-sliced beef meat, while I went for a conventional one.

Like in Lille, we get to see how Lyon makes its move to improve the quality of the city. Efforts in boosting its international profile is seen by the launch of new city-branding ad campaign: Addicted to Lyon. Based on the information I get from the internet, Addicted to Lyon tries to focus on the human and emotional side, showing their attachment to the city. It is very interesting to see big picture of citizens of Lyon from different professions and origins. I guess I would want to be in those pictures if I were working in Lyon.

We then went to visit my hostparent’s daughter’s family in the suburb of Lyon. We had a nice dinner time catching up since the last time I met them was more than 5 years ago. They made us a nice dinner: moulles (clams) and baked fish with rice. More important than that, the warmth of the family warmed us during the cold day of winter in Lyon.
